Google Business Profile Posts: Do They Actually Help Your Ranking?
GBP Posts are underused by most local businesses. What the evidence says about ranking impact, how to write posts that drive engagement, and a sustainable posting cadence.

What GBP Posts are
Google Business Profile Posts are short updates — similar to social media posts — that appear on your business's knowledge panel in Google Search and Maps. Types include What's New (general updates), Events (with dates), Offers (promotions with start/end dates), and Products (individual product highlights). What's New posts expire after 7 days; Events and Offers remain until their end date.
Do GBP Posts help rankings?
Direct ranking impact is modest — posts don't appear to be a major independent ranking factor. A business with weekly posts doesn't automatically outrank one with no posts if all other factors are equal.
However, posts contribute to prominence signals through engagement. Posts that receive clicks, calls, and direction requests generate engagement data that feeds Google's assessment of business activity. An active profile with fresh content signals to Google that the business is operational and relevant.
The stronger case for posts is conversion, not ranking. When users see your listing in the map pack, a knowledge panel with current promotions and fresh content is more persuasive than a bare-bones listing. Posts answer 'what's happening at this business right now' — which matters when deciding between you and a competitor.
What types of posts work best
Offer posts show consistently high engagement — local searchers often have immediate intent and respond to clear promotions. Even modest offers (10% off first visit, free consultation) signal value.
What's New posts should be genuinely newsworthy: new products, services, team members, process changes, holiday hours. Generic 'Call us today!' posts with no information generate little engagement and do nothing for your profile.
- Use images — posts with images consistently outperform text-only
- Include a CTA button matching the post intent: 'Call Now', 'Book', 'Get Offer'
- Keep text under 300 characters above the 'Read More' fold
- Post Tuesday–Thursday for highest engagement based on local search traffic patterns
- Never post the same content across multiple locations — Google treats it as duplicate
A sustainable posting cadence
Weekly is the recommended cadence — What's New posts expire after 7 days, so weekly posting ensures your profile always has fresh content. Batch your posts monthly: 30 minutes once per month drafting 4–5 posts is more sustainable than sporadic posting. Keep a running list of content topics: new products, completed projects, seasonal offers, FAQs you hear regularly.
