How to Find Backlink Opportunities Your Competitors Have (That You Don't)
Competitor backlink analysis is one of the highest-ROI link building tactics. Here's how to find the links your competitors have that you're missing.

The logic of competitor backlink analysis
If a website linked to your competitor, there's a reasonable probability they'd link to you too — you're in the same space, serving the same audience, and presumably producing comparable or better content. Competitor link analysis converts this probability into a concrete list of link targets, each with evidence that this type of site links to sites like yours.
This approach is more efficient than cold link prospecting because you're working from a pre-validated list. The question isn't 'would this site consider linking to a site like mine?' — you already know it has. The question is only whether your content is better or equally good, and whether you can establish contact.
The process
Identify your 3–5 top ranking competitors for your most important keywords. Export their backlink profiles using a link analysis tool. Filter for domains that link to one or more of your competitors but not to you — these are your gap opportunities.
Prioritize the list by domain authority, relevance to your niche, and link type. A resource page link from an industry association with DA 60 is worth more than 50 blog comment links from DA 20 sites. Focus your outreach on the highest-quality opportunities where you can make a legitimate case for a link.
For each target site, understand why they linked to your competitor. Is it on a resource page? In an article about your topic? From a directory listing? The reason they linked determines your outreach approach.
Your outreach message
The most effective link acquisition messages are specific and brief. Generic outreach ('I see you've linked to similar sites, would you link to mine?') has a very low response rate. Specific outreach ('I noticed your resource page on [topic] links to [competitor]. We've published [specific resource] that covers [gap in competitor resource] — it might be a useful addition') performs significantly better.
Reference specifically what they've done, why your resource is a relevant addition or alternative, and make the request direct and easy to act on. Don't write a paragraph about your company's history — write one sentence about who you are and three sentences about why the link serves their readers.
Beyond competitor analysis: other opportunity types
Broken link building — finding broken links on relevant pages and offering your content as a replacement — is complementary to competitor analysis. A page linking to a 404 has a strong incentive to replace the link; you're solving their problem, not just asking for a favor.
Unlinked brand mentions are another high-conversion opportunity. Search for your company or product name across the web. Sites that mention you without linking are the easiest outreach targets — they already have a positive relationship with your brand. A simple 'thanks for the mention, could you add a link?' often converts at 20–30%.
