The 6 types with evidence behind them
Not all social proof is equal. These six types have the clearest impact on conversion decisions.
- 1. Customer reviews with ratings — star ratings with written reviews increase conversion by 270% on lower-priced items and up to 380% for expensive products (Spiegel Research Center). Volume matters: 5 reviews is a threshold, 50 is credibility, 100+ is authority.
- 2. Testimonials from identifiable people — name, role, company, and photo. Anonymous testimonials are largely disregarded; attributed testimonials with a real photo increase belief by ~35%.
- 3. Usage statistics — 'Used by 12,000+ businesses', 'Over 2 million downloads'. Real numbers. Round numbers read as made-up; specific numbers ('11,847 users') read as real.
- 4. Expert or authority endorsements — third-party validation from recognized bodies or industry figures. More convincing for high-stakes decisions (health, finance, legal) than for commodities.
- 5. Case studies — detailed outcome stories ('Customer X increased revenue by Y doing Z'). Higher reading time requirement but the highest conversion impact for B2B and high-consideration purchases.
- 6. Media mentions / as-seen-in logos — publication logos ('As seen in Forbes, TechCrunch'). Works when the publications are recognized by your audience and the mentions are genuine.
