Checkout friction is unnecessary effort, uncertainty, delay, or error that makes it harder for a shopper to move from cart to order confirmation. It can come from undisclosed costs, unclear delivery choices, forced account creation, irrelevant fields, confusing validation, unavailable payment options, inaccessible controls, slow responses, or technical failures. A required step is not inherently harmful when its purpose is clear and it supports payment, fulfilment, fraud prevention, or legal obligations.
Why it matters: Do not assume that every extra field or screen causes the same conversion loss. Map the actual checkout, verify the analytics events, and inspect drop-off and errors at each step by device, browser, market, payment method, delivery option, and customer type. Test the journey with real tasks, including mobile, keyboard, autofill, invalid input, declined payment, and recovery after an interruption. Prioritise obstacles supported by behavioural data, support contacts, recordings or usability research, then measure changes with a controlled experiment where traffic allows.
