Shopify SEO Settings: 12 Things to Configure Before You Launch
The 12 Shopify SEO settings you need before launch — title tags, meta descriptions, canonical tags, sitemap, and the duplicate content traps most stores miss.

Why Shopify SEO needs deliberate setup
Shopify's default settings get stores live quickly, not ranking well. Out of the box, a new Shopify store creates duplicate content from product variants, generates redundant collection URLs, ships with pagination that splits link equity, and uses default title tag templates that ignore SEO best practices.
None of these are hidden problems — they just require explicit action. The stores that rank well on Shopify have configured the platform intentionally. These 12 settings are the difference between a store that competes organically and one that buys every customer.
The duplicate content traps unique to Shopify
Shopify creates two URLs for every product in a collection: /products/product-name and /collections/collection-name/products/product-name. Shopify handles this with canonical tags — the collection URL canonicalizes to the main product URL — but theme customizations or SEO apps can break this silently.
Product variants create a second risk. A product with 10 sizes × 5 colors generates 50 potential variant URLs. Shopify handles most via URL parameters, but some apps create separate indexable pages per variant. Check variant URLs in Google Search Console after launch.
Pagination is the third source. Collection pages at /collections/name?page=2 create near-identical pages. Use rel=prev/next tags and ensure collection pages have unique descriptions that don't repeat across pages.
Sitemap and robots.txt
Shopify auto-generates a sitemap at yourstore.com/sitemap.xml and robots.txt. The sitemap includes products, collections, pages, and blog posts — submit it to Google Search Console after launch.
Shopify's default robots.txt blocks /cart, /checkout, /account, and /search. Don't override it via theme code unless you understand every implication. Apps that create /apps/ URLs that get indexed dilute crawl budget — block these with a robots.txt editing app.
Image alt text and optimization
Shopify serves WebP automatically and generates responsive sizes, but it doesn't write alt text. Write descriptive alt text for every product image: 'Blue running shoes on white background' beats 'shoes' and beats keyword stuffing. Add alt text via Products → [product] → click image → 'Add alt text'.
Compress images before upload. Shopify serves WebP but won't fix a 4MB source file. Target under 200KB per product image, under 100KB for hero images. Use Crush.pics or similar for bulk optimization of existing images.
Run a full audit before launch
The settings above cover the highest-impact configuration points, but a Shopify store has dozens of additional factors affecting organic performance — product schema, page speed from apps and theme code, broken links from deleted products, collection structure, and mobile usability. WebEnture's Shopify Store Audit Agent runs a comprehensive analysis against all these factors and surfaces the issues costing you organic traffic, with specific recommendations for each.
