Exit Intent Popup Best Practices: Timing, Design, and Copy
How to design exit intent popups that convert without destroying UX: trigger timing, GDPR compliance, and copy patterns that work.
Timing and design
Do not show exit popups to visitors who just arrived (under 10-15 seconds). Do not show them on pages where the visitor has already converted. Do not show them more than once per session.
- Headline: the specific offer, immediately clear
- One email field
- CTA button: action-specific ('Get 10% Off', not 'Submit')
- Clear close button: X in top right
- Opt-out: 'No thanks' in neutral language
GDPR compliance and WebEnture
For EU visitors: email capture forms require explicit consent checkboxes. Pre-checked boxes are not compliant.
WebEnture's Email Capture and Popup Agent audits your popup implementations for compliance signals, timing configuration, and conversion best practice alignment.
